Remember the days when everyone’s feed on Instagram was organized chronologically? If you do, you aren’t alone. In fact, it seems like just about every single user that does remember it has been asking to get it back ever since the day it left. And all this wishing might have finally resulted in action!!!

A few weeks ago, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, came on the app to share a bit about the changes they’ve been testing. One of them being (*Drumroll please!*) THE CHRONOLOGICAL FEED. But not just the chronological feed! Here’s what Mosseri said in his caption:

“ We’re testing new ways for people to have more choice and control over what they see in feed. These tests include an ability to switch between three different views on your home screen (two of which would give you the option to see posts in chronological order):

– Home

– Favorites

– Following”

Let’s take a quick look at what these three different feeds would look like and what we hope this will mean for Insta users around the world!

Home

If you’re a fan of the algorithm-driven feed, you don’t have to worry about it going anywhere!

According to Mosseri, the home feed will be more or less the feed that we know today. On this feed, we’ll have a personalized selection of posts that Instagram predicts we will enjoy.

You’ll continue to see the combo of posts from the accounts and hashtags that you follow, in the order that you are most likely to enjoy them,  but you’ll also probably be getting some suggestions outside your actual follows.

Favourites

Mosseri calls this a “subset” of your feed – we call it your priority feed. This is where you’ll be able to select the accounts that mean the most to you and put them in one place, so you don’t have to miss a thing!

You’ll be able to play this however you want, but here are some ideas of who to put in your favourites: Family members, best friends, favourite creators, accounts that you collaborate with or hope to collaborate with.

We think this will be a great addition to the app. One of the most frustrating things about the algorithm is finding out that one of your favourite pages posted 5 times, and you haven’t seen any of the posts.  It’s likely that having a favourites page will help mitigate these types of problems in the future.

Following

This is the holy grail! Whereas the home feed will have more and more recommendations outside your following over time, your following feed will probably be the one that feels the most like home in your heart!

Mosseri claims that this feed will be the chronological one where you can go to quickly see what’s currently going on in your own circle. This is where you’ll find the most recent pics, vids, and reels from the accounts that you’ve chosen to follow.

This sounds great, and we’re looking forward to be able to see what’s going on in real time again. A chronological feed will be a big step for Instagram, since they’ve been against it for an eternity (in reality, probably the last 5 years or so). So, we’re curious to see if it will truly feel like the Instagram that everyone seemed to love the most. If it does, this could be excellent news for your accounts engagement rates since you’ll once again have the chance to target the ‘busy’ times of your followers so that they are more likely to see your posts.
