If you ever feel like you can’t keep up with all the different types of social media that are constantly popping up, don’t worry, you are not alone! From Facebook, to Twitter, to Snapchat, to Instagram, to LinkedIn, to TikTok, to Clubhouse, it can feel like there is a never-ending stream of new social media. It can be overwhelming.

With all these new platforms coming up, it’s hard to know which you should be using. It might make you wonder should i even be using them all? And like most things, the answer isn’t so black and white.

Today, we’re going to cover some reasons for when you should have multiple social accounts, but also when it may be best to stick to one!

4 times it can make sense to use a new social platform

You already have a dedicated following on one platform, but your target audience is more involved on a different platform

If you started an Instagram account years ago and have a great following there, then you should keep it. But say, for example, that your product is targeted at teenagers, then it might be time to start an account where you’ll find more of them – in this example, TikTok would be the place to go.

You have a good flow on social media and can keep up consistently with your primary social platform.

You’ve been posting on Insta 5 times a week for the last 2 years without fail. Congratulations, this makes you a social pro! If you think there’s another social platform that your business could benefit from and you’re ready to dedicate some extra time there (or reallocate the number of times you post per platform) then we say give it a go!

You just really love a new platform and its features

Happiness over everything! If you just can’t get enough of the fun short videos on TikTok, then there is no harm in adding an extra account to your social media tool kit. Don’t let your primary social account fall by the wayside, but also don’t stop yourself from having some fun and reaching a new audience.

You have great content that is easy to repurpose

If you have Facebook posts that can easily be used on Instagram or Snapchat with a quick tweak, then you might as well make the most of it! If you’re preparing for one platform, it probably won’t perform as well on another. But if it’s hardly any added work, you might as well go for it because it can still reach a new audience and get your brand out there!

3 times it may be best to stick with one platform

You can’t post consistently on the one social you already use

If you can’t keep up with a consistent schedule on your current social media, there’s very little hope that you will keep it up if you add a second platform! In this case, it’s better to do one account and do it right!

You’re only thinking about using a new platform because everyone else is

While it might work for some people, most people can’t keep up with something they can’t put their heart into. If you’re thinking about joining something just because of peer pressure, you’ll be putting a lot of extra stress on yourself, and the benefits will most likely be non-existent.

You don’t like social media

Social media is a great tool to use in your business, but if you flat out hate it, that will probably show in your posts. Figure out which social platform has the best reach to your target audience and try to put as much positive energy as you can into that one, and just forget about the others

The bottom line is that social media can be a difficult thing and it requires a lot of effort. If you have trouble with doing multiple accounts well, then it’s best to stick to one. If you love social media and are confident that you can take on more accounts and do them well, then you should give it a try!
